چکیده
In order to define the variability of carrying power (sometimes called “vocal effectiveness”) indexes in speech and singing, an acoustic analysis of vowels, sentences, singing exercises, and lyrical piece spoken and sung by 23 singers, was conducted. Two parameters were measured: (i) the difference in amplitude between the highest harmonic between 2 and 4 kHz and the one between 0 and 2 kHz ("Singing Power Ratio", Omori et al., 1996); and (ii) the difference between the singing formant (near 3000Hz) and a spectral minimum that follows it. Results showed that the bringing together of the third and fourth formants between spoken and sung vowels corresponded to the singing-formant, followed by the spectral minimum more significant in singing. The singing-formant was correlated with high values of Singing Power Ratio (-16dB) and high values of the difference in amplitude between the singing formant and the spectral minimum (32 dB). Only this last parameter differentiated untrained from trained subjects. High values of these two indexes were associated with great intensities, spoken [i], and singing in comparison with speech. The same values were obtained whatever the language. These two parameters varied depending on the task (sustained vowel versus singing exercises) and on vocal category. INTRODUCTION Acoustics can quantify the characteristics of singing as compared to speech. Vocal effectiveness, mainly defined in singing by the carrying power, is one of the main objectives to achieve without to much vocal effort, in an unamplified vocal technique such as Western classic singing. This study shows how the carrying power in speech and in Western lyrical singing can be quantified in terms of phonetic and acoustic factors. The parameters of carrying power and vocal effectiveness may be useful to quantify the progress of a learning singer, or to evaluate the degree of vocal rehabilitation of a patient singer.

Functional organization for musical consonance and tonal pitch hierarchy in human auditory cortex
Pitch relationships in music are characterized by their degree of consonance, a hierarchical perceptual quality that distinguishes how pleasant musical chords/intervals sound to the ear. The origins of consonance have been debated since the ancient Greeks. To elucidate the neurobiological mechanisms underlying these musical fundamentals, we recorded neuroelectric brain activity while participan...

In a text-based discovery and analytical environment, high quality textual representation is needed to support discovery of and research on spoken content. The increased representation of human thoughts and ideas as digitally represented speech highlights the need for efficient generation of high quality text representations of spoken content. The most cost-effective method of producing textual...

It is well–known that many East Asian languages have lexical (i.e. phonemic) prosody, and languages such as Mandarin are very well described. African languages are also frequently mentioned in the literature as tone languages, and phonetic interface patterns such as downstep are well–documented. It is less well– known that the functionality of tone patterning in African tone languages is fundam...

Emotional intelligence is an indispensable facet of human intelligence and one of the most important factors for a successful social life. Endowing machines with this kind of intelligence towards affective human–machine interaction, however, is not an easy task. It becomes more complex with the fact that human beings use several modalities jointly to interpret affective states, since emotion af...
متن کاملSome Cognitive Foundations of ‘‘Cultural Programs’’
This article explores issues of versification as an epitome of cultural programs. It is devoted to the question of how cognitive processes shape and constrain cultural and literary forms. It assumes that the generation of culture is governed by adaptation devices exploited for cultural and aesthetic ends. The argument is propounded in four stages. The first stage deals with an issue of poetic p...
